The Manorexia Epidemic

Anorexia and its association with teenage girls has been around for decades. In recent years a variant of Anorexia has emerged that is being referred to as Manorexia.

More and more men apparently are feeling pressure to develop what they believe to be the perfect body.

With that particular body image affected by males they see in the media, particularly what is perceived as the perfect body shape as portrayed by male models.

Many men have developed an obsession with getting rid of body fat and developing a six pack in their abdominal zone.

Many of those affected with Manorexia obsessively exercise every day of the week, in addition to consuming a reduced calorie level.

The National Association of Anorexia and Associated Disorders claims "eating disorders have reached epidemic levels in America, affecting up to 10 million women and 1 million men."

Watch the YouTube video below about a male model's descent into Manorexia....

So sad... I'm pretty sure that guy died quite a while ago. Rest in peace, Jeremy. =(

I think the term 'Manorexia' is extremely sexist and insulting. It almost makes the disease into a joke for men, which makes people suffering hesitate to speak out. They are 'Anorexic'. They have 'Anorexia Nervosa'. Calling them 'Manorexic' is so childish and immature. I think you should change the title of your entry to 'The Male Anorexia Epidemic'. Like, c'mon, 'The Manorexia Epidemic'? It's like you think it's a joke. That's seriously insulting. No wonder these poor guys hesitate to get help.

A Girl with an ED-------

You have an Erectile Dysfunction?

Males with Anorexia Nervosa are being referred to by many as being Manorexic. From my point of view, suggesting that identifying males with Anorexia as having Manorexia is being "childish and immature" is, well, sort of childish and immature. The fact that you can take a title like "The Manorexia Epidemic" and somehow extrapolate that the use of that verbiage indicates it is thought to be a joke and insulting, is well, insulting.

Anorexia is a nervous disorder. Think of it as the person obsessing over their body image. Yet no matter how much they improve it they still have a poor view of their body in their head. So the person keeps trying to get skinnier. It's how I understand it anyway.

And a girl with an ED is a girl with an Eating Disorder.

Congrats on reaching your goal dude.
